Time Savers

While I have a smoker in my backyard, sometimes one does not have the time to prepare everything from scratch. So I improvised with a trip to Costco, where I happend on their smoked salmon and decided to give it a try. I’ve tried a lot of smoked salmon in my time, but this one surprised me—it’s rich, tender, and had the right amount of smoke. It became the star of this simple but elevated sandwich. I add the extra smoked salmon to my salads at work all week.

A sandwich is a work of art

Step 1

I made a horseradish cream sauce. It is such a natural for salmon. This sauce had the right notes with the spice of the horseradish and the tang from the lemon plus the richness of the sour cream.

Step 2

To build the base, I grilled a slice of sourdough until it was golden and crisp on the outside but still tender in the middle. That slight char from the grill adds amazing depth and makes the bread strong enough to hold all the delicious toppings.

Step 3

I lathered on the homemade horseradish sour cream sauce, which gave the dish a tangy kick. Next followed a generous layer of smashed avocado for creaminess and heart-healthy fats.

Step 4

Then, I broke down the smoked salmon by pulling it apart. This created chunky pieces that I added on top of the smashed avocado.

Step 5

The final step to top it all off, I added a fried egg white—light and protein-packed, with just a bit of crisp on the edges. It’s a perfect finish to the sandwich, both visually and nutritionally.

Why This Sandwich Is a Healthy Win

What I love about this sandwich is how it balances flavor and nutrition. Here’s why it’s a great choice when you want something delicious and wholesome:

  • Smoked Salmon: High in protein and packed with omega-3 fatty acids, which support heart and brain health.
  • Avocado: Full of fiber, potassium, and healthy monounsaturated fats that keep you feeling full and satisfied.
  • Egg Whites: An excellent low-calorie source of lean protein, helping to build and maintain muscle.
  • Sourdough: Naturally fermented and easier to digest than most breads, sourdough adds a chewy bite and supports gut health.

Whether you serve it for brunch, lunch, or a light dinner, this open-faced smoked salmon sandwich delivers on flavor, texture, and feel-good ingredients. Plus, it comes together in minutes—perfect for busy days when you still want something special.

Let me know if you give it a try! I’d love to hear how you make it your own.

  1. Begin by adding the sour cream and heavy cream to a large mixing bowl. Next add the prepared horseradish and mix well. Squeeze in the lemon and sprinkle in the salt and pepper and set aside.

Making the Sandwich

  1. In a skillet, heat 1 tsp of the oil on medium high heat. At the same time, heat the remaining oil in a fried egg pan on medium high heat as well. Add the sourdough and top with a press. Cook both sides until nice and golden brown. For the egg, cover the fried egg pan with a second fried egg pan and cook until solid.

To begin the assembly, first lather the sauce on the sourdough. The next layer is the smashed avocado. Now the pieces of smoked salmon top the avocado. Finish by topping with the fried egg. You could add more salt and pepper hear if you like.
