While I have a smoker in my backyard, sometimes one does not have the time to prepare everything from scratch. So I improvised with a trip to Costco, where I happend on their smoked salmon and decided to give it a try. I’ve tried a lot of smoked salmon in my time, but this one surprised me—it’s rich, tender, and had the right amount of smoke. It became the star of this simple but elevated sandwich. I add the extra smoked salmon to my salads at work all week.

A sandwich is a work of art
Step 1
I made a horseradish cream sauce. It is such a natural for salmon. This sauce had the right notes with the spice of the horseradish and the tang from the lemon plus the richness of the sour cream.
Step 2
To build the base, I grilled a slice of sourdough until it was golden and crisp on the outside but still tender in the middle. That slight char from the grill adds amazing depth and makes the bread strong enough to hold all the delicious toppings.
Step 3
I lathered on the homemade horseradish sour cream sauce, which gave the dish a tangy kick. Next followed a generous layer of smashed avocado for creaminess and heart-healthy fats.
Step 4
Then, I broke down the smoked salmon by pulling it apart. This created chunky pieces that I added on top of the smashed avocado.
Step 5
The final step to top it all off, I added a fried egg white—light and protein-packed, with just a bit of crisp on the edges. It’s a perfect finish to the sandwich, both visually and nutritionally.
Why This Sandwich Is a Healthy Win
What I love about this sandwich is how it balances flavor and nutrition. Here’s why it’s a great choice when you want something delicious and wholesome:

- Avocado: Full of fiber, potassium, and healthy monounsaturated fats that keep you feeling full and satisfied.
- Egg Whites: An excellent low-calorie source of lean protein, helping to build and maintain muscle.
- Sourdough: Naturally fermented and easier to digest than most breads, sourdough adds a chewy bite and supports gut health.
