I went into this research with a preconceived notion that sweet potatoes are healthier than there white potato alternative.  I know this is generally what most people think.  Much to my surprise, the LA Times article linked below, which was based on a New England Journal of Medicine of study, suggested that the actual nutritional attributes are virtually identical.  The study suggested 2 things: first, more study is necessary and two, more interestingly that the health attributes of each have more to do with how the potato is cooked.

Another interesting article I found, that has lots of useful and informative data, comes from research about Paleo diets.  The end result of this study is that they both have significant attributes making it difficult to really say one form is better than the other.
