I was skeptical when I got the request for this new Blippar app but maybe that is just me.
I am always skeptical with anything new. I really like new technology and like to think I am with it for my age but I will bet my kids beg to differ. So what is Blippar? It is an app designed to create an experience where consumers can stay engaged with the shopping experience and a brand. Said a little more simply, you get to play with animation while in a store. Physically, you aim your iPhone using the Blippar app right at the product. The software will recognize the product and then go into animation. Pretty cool huh?
So when I held my phone up to the Heinz Ketchup bottle, this image appeared. As you can kind of see, it actually started scrolling. What pops up is recipes that you can download if you like them. The Philadelphia Cream Cheese lid opened up and things started coming at me. I have to say I was walking through Walmart thinking this is pretty cool. I did, however, block a few aisles and there was music on some of the apps.
The above screen shot popped out of the Reese’s Puff cereal box. This final screen shot popped out of the Trix cereal box.
Now, I have to say, I was thoroughly entertained. As with any new technology, there were some bumps. I tried this on some other products, and unless it was the exact product, it did not have an app. What I mean is I tried this on Pepsi, Coke & Kraft and could not find the exact product it was designed for. I am sure as they build their platform, there will be tie-ins on many other products. Your shopping experience will never be the same again. By the way, I picked up Kraft’s Sharp Cheddar Cheese and made Macaroni ‘N Cheese for dinner. How about topping a Cheeseburger with the Mac ‘n Cheese? There isn’t anything that says summer much more than a grilled cheeseburger. Is there?
