Is there anything better than a burger? A burger is about as American as it gets next to apple pie.
My favorite way to eat a burger is on rye bread. But I am gluten free so something had to change. Those of us who are gluten free, know the best way to eat gluten free bread is toasted. So naturally, a Gluten Free Patty Melt is going to be great because the bread will be grilled. The Gluten Free Patty Melt was awesome.
The other thing I so love about the patty melt is the CARAMELIZED ONIONS. I love caramelized onions on anything but they do not get any better than on a burger. The reason a patty melt is so good is that each component is good. The gluten free bread, really good cheese, the onions and a well flavored burger make this recipe delectable.
In this burger, I picked a really good cheese. I used a white sharp cheddar cheese. It is a rich cheese with deep flavor. Have I mentioned that these burgers are simple but bumped up? Use a meat with a decent fat content (it will get cooked off). Enhance the ground beef with spices. I flavored the ground beef with salt, pepper, dehydrated onions and worcestershire sauce. Always remember, to add some oomph to your ground meat in your burger. It adds so much.

- 2 Tsp Black Pepper
- 8 Slices Gluten Free Bread
- 1 Cup Caramelized Onions

-
Begin by combining the dehydrated onions, salt, pepper and worcestershire sauce to the ground beef. Mix well and form into 4 burgers.
Add half of the oil to a cast iron skillet on medium high heat. Add the burgers and cook 4 - 5 minutes per side. In the last 2 minutes of cooking, top with the cheese.
When you add the cheese, add the remaining oil to another skillet. Place the bread slices in the skillet and brown for 2 minutes.
Finish by assembling the patty melt by adding the burger to the bread, topping with onions and the top piece of bread.
Serve and enjoy!

How can this patti melt be.gluten free when the recipe uses 1/4 cup of Worchestershire, which contains wheat? Defeats the purpose of using gluten free bresd/bun.

I totally agree that it defeats the purpose. I am not celiac so sometimes I may miss understanding an ingredient. I just googled it and this site says it is gluten free. So I am unclear after seeing your note – https://www.publix.com/pd/lea-and-perrins-worcestershire-sauce-the-original/RIO-PCI-102368
