I found this turkey ham at my neighborhood grocery store – WOODMANS MARKET. I have not eaten pork in some 15 plus years but used to love smoked ham. So I had to try it in one of my favorite memories was a Gluten Free Grilled Turkey Ham & Cheese minus the turkey part. I liked the ham but its flavor was not as strong as I would have liked. I also diced it up and tried it in a cheese omelette.

You ask what is turkey ham? So did I and since I do not eat pork, I had to try it.

I love sandwiches

I love sandwiches but have had them less than I used to because I eat gluten free most of the time. (That has now changed because of all the gluten free breads I have made and posted on the blog.) This recipe used homemade gluten free bread. Some sandwich examples, be they old from my blog include:

THREE MEAT DELI SANDWICH

CHICKEN SANDWICH MILANESE

TURKEY MEATBALL SANDWICH

JALAPENO MAC N CHEESE

Who invented the sandwich

One can develop so many different types of sandwiches and have a lot of variety. A sandwich is simply a mix of ingredients between two slices of bread. So who invented the sandwich you ask? It is widely attributed to John Montague – the 4th Earl of (wait for it) SANDWICH. This article says it was actually his cook whom will never be known. It was developed in the 1700’s. And the story goes that he asked for a way to eat his food where he would not have to leave the gambling table. I hope that story is true because it is just so funny!

My recipe is pretty easy to make. Grill the turkey ham to put a char on it. Put the ham and cheese inside two pieces of bread. Grill to a perfect brown and get a melt on the cheese. Dig in. That’s it.

Ingredients

  • 1 Slice Turkey ham
  • 2 Pieces Gluten Free bread store bought or see notes for recipe link
  • 3 Ounces Sharp cheddar cheese
  • 2 Tbsp Butter

Instructions

  1. Begin by heating a skillet on medium high heat. Add the thick slice of turkey ham to the skillet. Grill 1 minute on each side. Just trying to get some char.

Reduce the heat to medium. Assemble the sandwich and half the butter to the pan. Once the butter is melted, add the sandwich to the pan. Cook approximately 3 minutes per side. You will butter the top piece of bread after you first put the sandwich in the pan. If the cheese needs more melting, just put a lid on for a minute and turn the heat all the way down.

To serve, cut in half. Enjoy!
