This Friday Five is all about the flavors of Cuba. I love spice and love the Cuban style of cooking. These dishes expand my familiarity, understanding and knowledge of Cuban recipes. I hope it does for you too.
To influence you in the right direction, let’s start with a drink (non-alcoholic) that drinks more like a dessert. This is a Crema De Vie from The Musician, Who Cooks.
Now I don’t think this is served as an appetizer, but its size sure suggests it can be. These look awesome so we are going to say they are an appetizer. Take a look at these Papas Rellenas from The Culinary Chronicles.
Offer a true dish that can be served as an appetizer, let’s try this traditional Black Bean Soup from Heather Homemade.
We still are not even ready to get to dinner. I have not yet presented the Cubano sandwich which maybe the one Cuban dish that most people know. So here is one presented by Three To One featuring Iron Chef Jose Garces cookbook.
A very traditional main dish is the Ropa Vieja prepared here by Branny Boils Over.
The other very traditional main dish is Arroz Con Pollo created here by Prevention RD. Check out this post because Nicole really does a nice thing by supporting the needs of other people.
To complement these main dishes, this refreshing Avocado, Pineapple, and Watercress Salad from Pixelated Crumb.
So you say you need something sweet to finish off this Cuban feast. Look at these Pane Zebra from Cannella Vita (and she created this as a high school student – she is talented). Enjoy!

LOVE this roundup! Living in South Florida, I am fortunate enough to have some incredible Cuban restaurants nearby. You know, for the days that I am not sure I can conquer what you just did!!

What’s your favorite Cuban restaurant in Miami. I remember is Cuban fish restaurant I saw on Diners, Drive-in and Dives but I can’t remember the name. Do you know it?

Hi Peter,
Thank you for featuring the Crema de Vie recipe on your blog. I did want to clarify that the drink does have alcohol (rum), and is not non-alcoholic. You could make it without the rum but the flavor is not quite as authentic without it. Best wishes on exploring your passion for food!
Chef Peter Block
Thanks for clarifying. I am sure this drink is awesome with and without the alcohol.
