With the holidays upon us including Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and Christmas, it is a perfect time to pull together a post with treats reflective of each tradition and holiday. Hanukkah is know as the Festival of Lights, an 8 day holiday. It represents a time where a small group of people overcame a majority – a reminder that we can all overcome significant obstacles. Kwanzaa is a week long celebration of African heritage started in the late 1960’s. Both holidays, as we know them and there current practices are pretty modern. Christmas, on the other hand, commemorates the birth of Jesus.
We begin our cultural food journey with this Kwanzaa Sweet Potato Pie with Candied Pecans and Coconut recipe from the Food Network Kitchen.
Another very traditional cookie associated with Jewish holidays are known as rugelach. Here is a neat twist on a classic american flavor profile with these Peanut Butter and jelly Rugelach created by Baking Bites.
A very traditional treat with the lighting of the Hankukah candles are donuts. These are Cocoa Fritters as found on The Kitchn from a guest post by Cheryl Sternman.
This next idea bringing in Christmas treats is too cute. Leanne Bakes made these Santa Strawberries.
Our next offering is a mountain, literrally, of meringue. It is known as a Pavlova with Cranberries by Simone’s Kitchen.
