My iPhone Food Photography & Video Gear
I get asked about my “camera” constantly, and the answer surprises people. It’s an iPhone. The magic isn’t the phone — it’s a small, boring kit of support gear that makes the phone perform like a studio. Here’s the whole thing.

01
The phone
A recent iPhone. Any model from the last few years shoots photos and video more than good enough for a blog and Instagram — I’d put money into light and a tripod long before a new phone.
02
An overhead tripod — the single best purchase
The one that changed everything for me. A tripod with an overhead arm (or a dedicated overhead stand) holds the phone perfectly still, directly above the plate, for flat lays and top-down cooking shots. Steady and repeatable beats handheld every time.
03
One good light — for when the sun won’t cooperate
Natural window light is my default, but a dimmable LED panel with a softbox or diffuser lets me shoot on gray days and at night with the same soft, natural look. Get one that dims and lets you adjust warmth.
04
A phone mount or clamp
A solid clamp to attach the phone to the tripod arm at any angle — straight-on, 45°, overhead.
05
Reflectors — basically free
White foam boards to bounce light into shadows, and a black one to deepen them when I want drama. A few dollars at a craft store, and they punch way above their price.
06
A couple of backdrops
Two or three surfaces — a light one, a dark one, maybe a wood tone — cover almost everything. Large vinyl or textured boards store flat and read as real tabletops on camera.
That’s the entire kit
Notice what’s not on it: no expensive camera body, no lenses. Put your money into the tripod and the light — the two things that make an ordinary phone shoot like a pro. How I actually use this gear is in iPhone Food Photography.
