The phone

A recent iPhone. Any model from the last few years shoots photos and video more than good enough for a blog and Instagram — I’d put money into light and a tripod long before a new phone.

An overhead tripod — the single best purchase

The one that changed everything for me. A tripod with an overhead arm (or a dedicated overhead stand) holds the phone perfectly still, directly above the plate, for flat lays and top-down cooking shots. Steady and repeatable beats handheld every time.

One good light — for when the sun won’t cooperate

Natural window light is my default, but a dimmable LED panel with a softbox or diffuser lets me shoot on gray days and at night with the same soft, natural look. Get one that dims and lets you adjust warmth.

A phone mount or clamp

A solid clamp to attach the phone to the tripod arm at any angle — straight-on, 45°, overhead.

Reflectors — basically free

White foam boards to bounce light into shadows, and a black one to deepen them when I want drama. A few dollars at a craft store, and they punch way above their price.

A couple of backdrops

Two or three surfaces — a light one, a dark one, maybe a wood tone — cover almost everything. Large vinyl or textured boards store flat and read as real tabletops on camera.
