I have mentioned before that I really want to expand my bread making but the main problem is not having enough time. Well I saw this recipe for Beer Bread from My Baking Addiction and had to give it a try. Literally, you combine the ingredients and bake for 50 – 55 minutes.
Now, I was skeptical. How could the dough rise enough? Well, the recipe comes from a woman who’s blog is named My Baking Addiction. Who I am to question the result. So I jumped in feet first or maybe hands first. In any case, the only liquid used is the beer. I debated on whether I should serve it to my 17 year old and his friend but figured it was OK since it was cooked and the alcohol supposedly burns off.
But I digress. The result was pretty darn good. Not sure it is the first recipe I would choose if I had enough time to make bread but in a pinch this was quite good. The bread was even better when used in a grilled sandwich the next day but that story is for a later post.
Recipe
Beer Bread:
Ingredients:
- 3 cups self-rising flour
- 1/3 cup sugar
- 1 tsp kosher salt
- 12 oz beer (I used Sam Adams Boston Lager as you can see)
- 2 tbsp melted butter
- Preheat the oven to 375 degrees
- In a loaf pan, spray with vegetable oil, set aside
- In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, salt and beer, mix well.
- Pour mixture into the loaf pan and bake for 50 – 55 minutes
- 3 minutes before the end of the cooking, melt the butter and brush along the top and finish cooking. Enjoy!

My mom used to make beer bread. This recipe took me back! thanks for sharing it on Katies Language Cafe’s weekly link up! ~~Katie
I tried making beer bread a while ago but I didn’t have any self-rising flour. Instead I mixed baking soda (or was it baking powder? Now I forget…) with the flour per a substitution website I saw online but the taste was SO strong and bitter and I hated it. Blech! I will have to try again…
There’s a Cabot cheddar soda bread recipe on King Arthur Flour that similar in texture to beer bread but is AMAZING. Try making that next time!
I love those easy-peazy kinds of recipes. I have a coule of “stir” recipes for bread. You might like this one: http://whatscooking-suddenlysusan.blogspot.com/2011/01/jans-dilly-bread.html
