Today is a quick post about a restaurant I went to with my family.  My law student son loves to be on the move.  He suggested going downtown to see the Zoo Lights at the Lincoln Park Zoo.  Great idea – and time with the family – nothing better.

The family relies on me for dinner whether it be cooking it or choosing where we go.  Now, they know I am particular about where we go.  I am almost solely influenced by what I have seen on my various TV shows.  There are so many cool places all over.  Most of you know, my favorite show is Diners, Drive-in & Dives (Blog link created to follow the show and its restaurants).  This really reflects me, my cooking style and what I like to eat.  That is, I am not fancy.  I love good, creative food and I love the story, the culture behind the food.  So when my son was presenting ideas for the family adventure, he naturally googled Diners, Drive-in & Dives  (in Chicago) Restaurants proximate to the zoo.  We came up with Chilam Balam.  I understand it has also been on Check Please!.

The restaurant is located on Broadway, just a couple of blocks north of Diversey.  This is a Mexican restaurant – a food my family loves.  But do not expect to find burritos and tacos on this menu.  The menu is unique and changes frequently.  Our favorite dishes this evening were the Shitake Mushroom Empanadas and the Grilled Salmon with Leeks Ajillo and Sunchokes.
