Today was a day of smoking various meats.  So I needed a BBQ sauce that would go well with lamb, ground beef and chicken.  This recipe is strong enough to stand up to the lamb but sweet enough to enhance the chicken.

Recipe
Whiskey BBQ Sauce (Adapted from Smoke & Spice):

  1. In a sauce pan, melt 4 tbsp of butter on medium heat and add 1/2 diced yellow onion and saute until soft – about 5 minutes
  2. Mix in the following ingredients, 3/4 cup of Makers Mark Whiskey, 2/3 cup of ketchup, 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar, 2 fresh squeezed oranges with the zest of 1 orange, 1/2 cup of pure maple syrup, 1/3 cup of molasses, 2 tbsp of worcestershire, 1/2 tsp of black pepper and the kicker – 2 dried red chilis.
  3. Simmer on low for 40 – 60 minutes stirring frequently
  4. I like thicker sauce so I added 1 tbsp corn starch mixed into 1/2 cup of cold water and added it to my sauce mixing well and simmering for another 10 minutes
