I have a very simple goal with this post. Peace! Can’t we all just get along. The most basic tenet of all religions is love thy neighbor – otherwise, known as the Golden Rule. Such a simple concept. How come, we can’t live by it. I know our minds immediately go to the world and all the Countries that don’t like each other. But what about us? What about each one of us? What separates us from one another?
- Judgment
- Ignorance
- Naivety
- Raised by parents with these misguided beliefs
Now I want to make sure that I do not come across as preachy. The very small list I created above only demonstrates that the traits that cause us to choose separation over love thy neighbor is not a positive trait. This may not seem like much but that is a pretty significant Sunday Revelation. If we look inward, we can tell ourselves, if our attitude about others is grounded, or more than likely, coming from a skewed perspective.
So let’s not worry about what others do or what others think. Let each one of us take a moment of introspection and ask ourselves if we truly respect everyone. Let us also watch our thoughts during the course of the day and “check in.” Do we see someone different from ourselves and appreciate that person’s uniqueness or do we think more about why they are different from us. If one does the former and sees similarity of form, that is awesome. If one, however, notices more of the differences then we have work to do. That is the good news. If we see that which needs to be changed, then we have made the first step and are on the right track.
So today think Love and if the opportunity presents itself, watch your thoughts and project positive thoughts toward another individual.
Being lucky enough to live in a big, diverse city is very good for learning to love and respect other, different kinds of people. Any time I go out of the door I am surrounded by so many races, cultures, faiths, theories and orientations. You get used to it and the difference doesn’t seem threatening. I think a lot of bigoted people are inexperienced rather than genuinely horrible.
Deena, you are so right. The opportunities appear in front of us to give us the chance to be better people.
