As we get deep into summer, we still have time to create summer flavors. One recipe that might surprise you, is this Best Dill Pickle Dip. This delightful appetizer, starts with homemade garlic dill pickles.
Jump to RecipeBefore we delve into the delicious dip, let’s connect with the base – the homemade garlic dill pickles. As I like to do, I looked up the history of pickling. The origin of the dill pickle can be traced back to ancient civilizations. It is believed that pickling vegetables originated in Mesopotamia over 4,000 years ago. The process of preserving food in brine or vinegar was developed as a means of storing perishable items for times of scarcity. People have been preserving vegetables in brine, vinegar, and spices because it extended the life of produce year-round. The use of dill as a flavoring agent in pickles can be attributed to the cuisine of Eastern Europe, particularly in countries like Poland, Russia, and Germany. Dill was valued for its medicinal properties and was thought to have calming effects on the stomach.
The dill pickle, in particular, is achieved through the infusion of dill weed, garlic, and other aromatic spices.
Now that you have your homemade garlic dill pickles, it’s time to turn them into a delectable dip. What you’ll need for the Dill Pickle Dip is softened cream cheese and sour cream. Then, added to this base are the dill pickles, the pickle brine, fresh dill and garlic powder. Mix well to ensure all the flavors are evenly distributed. Cover the bowl and refrigerate until the party begins.
