PIRI PIRI chicken, also known as Peri peri chicken, made popular in Portugal and brought from African countries. The dish is believed to have originated in Angola, which was a Portuguese colony until 1975. The word “piri piri” is actually Swahili, which means “pepper pepper,” and refers to the fiery chili peppers that are used to make the dish.

The dish was brought to Portugal by Portuguese colonizers who had spent time in Angola and other African countries. Once in Portugal, the dish evolved to include the use of the Portuguese piri piri chili pepper, which is a small, fiery chili pepper that is known for its intense heat and fruity flavor.

Today, piri piri chicken has become fairly well know because of restaurants like Nando. The dish is typically made by marinating chicken in a spicy mixture of piri piri chili peppers, garlic, lemon juice, and other spices, and then grilling or roasting.
