Amish Friendship Bread

August 20, 2020 by Peter Block Leave a Comment

This Amish Friendship Bread might be one of the best recipes out there. It has become my wife’s favorite and I religiously make it every 10 days.

Our first exposure to the bread came when one of my partners brought into the office the bread his mother made. I brought home some for my wife and she became addicted. LITERALLY. It is called a bread but it has the texture of a banana bread loaf. Why do they call it a bread? It is sweet without being to sweet. It works for breakfast or a dessert.

I looked up the HISTORY of this recipe to find Amish does not have anything to do with it. The bread, pound cake, started as somewhat of a chain letter. The bread begins with asourdough starter. You follow a 10 day cycle and on the 10th day you make the loaf. The bread has plenty of sugar and oil and just the right amount of cinnamon to give it its distinctive flavor.

So the recipe breaks into two parts. The starter is 1 cup sugar, 1 cup flour and 1 cup of milk. The starter is added every 5 days with the 10th day being the day the bread is made. The proportions used to make the bread depend on how many loaves you plan to make. The basic recipe for 1 loaf is 1 cup canola oil, 1/2 cup of milk, 3 eggs and 1 tbsp of vanilla for the wet ingredients. The dry ingredients include 2 cups flour, 1 cup sugar, 1 1/4 tsp baking powder, 1/2 tsp cinnamon, 1/2 tsp salt, 1/2 tsp baking soda and 1 box of vanilla pudding

Ingredients

Starter

  • 2 Cups Flour divided
  • 2 Cups Sugar divided
  • 2 Cups Milk divided

Wet Ingredients

  • 1 Cup Canola oil
  • 1/2 Cup Milk
  • 3 Whole Eggs
  • 1 Tsp Vanilla extract
  • 3/4 Cup Starter

Dry Ingredients

  • 2 Cups All-purpose flour
  • 1 Cup Sugar
  • 1 1/4 Tsp Baking powder
  • 1/2 Tsp Salt
  • 1/2 Tsp Cinnamon
  • 1/2 Tsp Baking soda
  • 1 Box Vanilla pudding

Instructions

Starter

  1. The recipe starts with someone giving you some starter. At day 5, you add 1 cup each flour, sugar and milk. Repeat again at day 10.

Wet Ingredients

  1. Combine all the ingredients in a mixing bowl. Mix well.

Dry Ingredients

  1. Combine all the ingredients and mix well.

Assembling the Bread

  1. Slowly mix the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients. I put 1/3 of the dry ingredients at a time. When combined correctly, you have a thick batter. Prep your bread loaf pan with cooking spray and dust with a mixture of cinnamon and sugar. Pour in the batter. Top with more cinnamon and sugar. Place in a 325 degree oven for 1 hour. Be sure to check doneness with a toothpick.

After baking, let the bread rest for 15 minutes before removing from the pan.

    Serve and enjoy!
