The inspiration of this Hamburger Loco Moco Recipe is my memory of a Guy Fieri DINERS, DRIVE-INS and DIVES episode.  I had made some hamburgers the night before with the idea already, I wanted some leftovers.  I knew I wanted to try this Hawaiian fast food classic.  The origin of the loco moco is the HAWAIIAN DINER or FAST FOOD JOINT.  What’s Cooking America explains that it is the every man’s dish.  Makes sense – it is pure comfort food.

Hamburger Loco Moco Recipe

The learning for this dish is how do you re-heat meat without drying it out?  My little trick is to cook in a pan filled with liquid and covered.  In so doing, the meat stays moist and is heated by steaming.  I am obviously not a professional chef, and have not had any professional training, but I know this steaming method is one method used in restaurants to finish off dishes.  You will love this method for your leftovers.  I would say it works really well on fattier, lesser cuts of meat.  But it should also do OK on better cuts of meat like, steaks.  You just will not be able to keep them on the rare side unless you under cook the steaks that you know will be leftover.

The other fact I like about this dish is the topping of the burger with a fried egg.  The egg makes the dish so creamy.  It enhances the creaminess of the mushroom gravy.  The traditional loco moco is smothered in gravy.  I am not quite sure if there is only one way to do this recipe.  When I have seen it made it is with a dark gravy.  So I added the mushrooms for both flavor and texture.  The mushroom gravy may be the best component of this dish.
